Dr Margaret Buring

Dr Margaret Buring is distinguished and very experienced General Practitioner. Margaret graduated from Sydney University with Honours in 1968. After graduating, Dr Buring studied haematology and microbiology with the Royal College of Pathologists before entering General Practice and raising her three children.

In 1986, Dr Buring joined the Red Cross during the HIV-AIDS crisis as a medical counsellor and completed her Masters of Medical Administration at the University of NSW.

In 1995 she was appointed Director of the Parramatta Blood Bank where she led the response to the Hepatitis C crisis. A year later Dr Buring was appointed as CEO of the South Australian Blood Bank where she administered the Blood Service and supervised the scientific and research staff. It was while she was in Adelaide that the Red Cross, under Dr Buring’s direction, collaborated with both the Haematology and Oncology Departments of the Royal Adelaide Hospital on international, ground-breaking research on stem cells.

In 2006 Dr Buring retired from the Red Cross after 19 years and returned to General Practice on the Gold Coast where she worked for a time with Dr Alex Douglas. Dr Buring has been a General Practitioner now for over 28 years and has trained with the Australasian College of Medical Nutrition and the Australian College of Nutritional and Environmental Medicine. Margaret has led a long professional life focused upon human immunity, which has defined both her work with the Red Cross, and in her General Practice.
